Stroke is the third-leading cause of death in the U.S. (No. 1 in Portugal and in Asia) and the primary cause of adult disability. Stroke accounts for 1 of every 18 deaths in the U.S. About 795,000 Americans suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year. In 2008, the estimated stroke-related medical costs were ~$65.5 billion.
